Tea Newsletter ~ November 2009

Hello, Everyone!

It’s getting cold here in Colorado Springs. Time to have a tea party before the snow comes to stay! For all of you in the Colorado Springs area, I will host a Let’s Do Tea party at my home on Sunday, November 8, 1-3 PM. If you will be visiting the area, let me know – you are most welcome! There will be a door prize drawing and extra chances to win for anyone who brings a friend.

Recipe (you can send me your favorites to be published in future issues!)
Beans of the Dead (Fave Dei Morti)
Note: Here is a recipe for Italian “soul” cookies. The theme of beans suggests the idea of burial and rebirth. Sometimes these are called “Ossi dei Morti” or “Bones of the Dead” and shaped like bones instead of beans. Even though the idea of bones and the dead sound morbid, these cookies are delicious! Enjoy them on All Souls’ Day with a cup of your favorite tea. This is a variation of a recipe from A Continual Feast by Evelyn Birge-Vits

2/3 cup almonds, finely ground
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
4 Tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces and softened
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Grated rind of 1 lemon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Place very finely ground almonds in a large bowl. Add the sugar, and blend well with a fork. Add the flour and the cinnamon, then the butter, then finally the egg, the vanilla, and the grated lemon rind, mixing well with each addition. With a fork or floured hands, work the mixture to a smooth paste.

Break off large-bean-sized pieces of paste (about 1 inch long), and place them about 2 inches apart on a greased, floured baking sheet. Squash each piece slightly to produce an oval shape like a lima or fava bean.

Bake for 10 – 15 minutes, or until golden.

Yield: about 100 one-inch beans.

Variation: shape dough into bones, 1 or 2 inches long.

Tea Party ideas
How about an open house party around All Souls Day? Serve Beans of the Dead with a variety of teas – how about Cranberry Peach or Pumpkin Spice?
